(CNN) -- Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has joined Real Madrid on loan with a view to a permanent deal at the end of the season.
The striker, from Togo, has only featured in eight English Premier League games for City this season and had repeatedly expressed his desire to leave.
Real have been looking to reinforce their striking ranks after an injury to Argentina international Gonzalo Higuain that could keep him out for the rest of the season.
Adebayor scored 19 goals in 36 league and cup starts for City and prior to joining in 2009, he netted 62 goals in three-and-a-half seasons at Arsenal. He was named African Player of the Year in 2008.

A statement on the Spanish club's website read: "Real Madrid and Manchester City FC have reached a deal that will see Emmanuel Adebayor play on loan for the former club.
"The player will remain at Real Madrid until the end of the current season, at which point the club hold a unilateral option to purchase the player."
Real turned their attention to Adebayor after they had a $61 million bid for Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero rejected.
The 22-year-old is son-in-law to Argentina legend Diego Maradona and has long been touted as one of Europe's leading strikers.
Real's city rivals Atletico also confirmed they had turned down an offer of $82 million from Chelsea for Argentina's Aguero and 24-year-old defender Diego Godin, from Uruguay.
Atletico president Miguel Angel Gil told the club's website: "Atletico have said no to the two offers because they believe in these two players and believe in the project we're doing."
Gil also confirmed that current Atletico boss Quique Sanchez Flores would remain in his job until the end of the season. Atletico are currently seventh in the Spanish league.
