Bears' Justin Fields Doubtful for Chargers Game Due to Thumb Injury, Eberflus Says | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus told reporters on Monday that quarterback Justin Fields is doubtful for Sunday night's matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Ian Rapoport @RapSheet#Bears coach Matt Eberflus described QB Justin Fields as doubtful for this week, adding, "He's just not there yet." Another week of Tyson Bagent, who really impressed against the #Raiders.
Fields missed Sunday's matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders with a thumb injury. He dislocated the thumb on his throwing hand during the third quarter of the team's loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 15.
Eberflus told reporters on Oct. 20 that Fields was making progress in his recovery, though he didn't rule out the possibility of surgery for the quarterback at a later date.
"He's improving. Mobility is getting better, swelling going down. Grip strength is better," Eberflus said. "He's trending in the right direction. He'll be week-to-week. We'll know more on Monday."
While Fields struggled to begin the season, his play had picked up prior to suffering the thumb injury.
In Weeks 4 and 5, the Ohio State product completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 617 yards and eight touchdowns against one interception, in addition to rushing for 82 yards on 15 carries. It was one of the best stretches of his fledgling career.
Fields has also shown more signs of overall progress as a passer this year despite Chicago boasting a 1-5 record in his starts. He has completed 61.7 percent of his passes for 1,201 yards and 11 touchdowns against six interceptions in six starts, in addition to rushing for 237 yards and one score.
With Fields sidelined, the Bears turned to undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent, who attended Division II Shepherd University, at quarterback. He stunned the Raiders, finishing 21-of-29 for 162 yards and a touchdown in Chicago's 30-12 win.
Chicago is now 2-5 on the season.
