BI Claims ATM Security Insufficient and Must be Improved

TEMPO.CO, Surabaya - Soekowardojo, Deputy Head of Bank Indonesia (BI) Representative at Area IV Surabaya, said that the security level on Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is still insufficient. Some of the machines are unequipped with the sensor to detect money withdrawal.

Soekowardojo expressed his concern following the recent apprehension of an ATM burglars syndicate by the Surabaya Police Department. In carrying out their actions, the suspects shut down the electricity, which shuts off the ATM and making it unable to detect money withdrawal.

Soekowardojo suspected that the action involved an inside-man. The incident, however, becomes a lesson for BI and banking institutions to improve ATM security.
