Chung Mong-Joon: From Shipbuilding to Politics
Chung Mong-Joon is a South Korean businessman and politician with a net worth of $1.6 billion. He is the biggest individual shareholder in the world’s largest shipbuilding company, Hyundai Heavy Industries, thanks to being the sixth son of the Hyundai conglomerate founder, Chung Ju-yung. After running the company until 1988, he entered politics and is currently serving his fifth term in the National Assembly of South Korea. In 2002, he unsuccessfully ran for the presidency.
Chung has recently expressed his support for nuclear armament, stating that “Seoul can no longer deal with a neighboring rogue state armed with a machine gun, when it only has a piece of stone.” He is also the former president of the Korea Football Association and an honorary vice president of FIFA. Chung Mong-Joon is married with four children.
