LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Cardinal Roger Mahony has returned to his residence at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels after being discharged from an area hospital, church officials said Monday.

Mahony had been taken April 28 to Providence Saint Joseph Hospital in Burbank for the treatment of a blood clot in his lung. He was released Sunday morning.

Mahony, 66, will remain on blood-thinning medication and his prognosis for a full recovery is very good, said his physician, Dr. Lee Parsons.

"The cardinal will now need to rest for the next week or two and then slowly resume his usual activities," Parsons said. "He should be careful not to sit for long periods of time without getting up to stretch and walk around."

Mahony said he is feeling "terrific" and looking forward "to resuming my normal duties and to continuing my ministry to all of our wonderful people in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles."

EXTRA INFORMATION

In July 1998, Mahony underwent treatment for a blood clot that formed after surgery to remove his prostate.

Mahony, who was born in the Hollywood area of Los Angeles in 1936, was ordained a priest in 1962 and was installed archbishop of Los Angeles in 1985, becoming the first head of the Los Angeles Archdiocese born in that city.

In 1991, he was elevated to cardinal.

Mahony returned last month from Rome where he and other U.S. cardinals met with the Pope John Paul II to discuss the controversy over the church's handling of complaints of sexual abuse of children by priests.

Four men have filed two RICO sex abuse lawsuits Monday charging Mahony with aiding and abetting a felon.

The suits allege that Mahony was informed in 1991 and 1994 about claims of sexual abuse by one of his priests that occurred between 1964 and 1975 but did not take action.
