Elton R. Williams – Metropolitan Funeral

On Thursday, August 27, 2020, Elton passed away to his forever home to be with the Lord. Elton R. Williams was born on July 2, 1951 in the Hattonsville neighborhood of Portsmouth, VA which he joked about all the time. As a child he attended Southwestern Elementary located in Norfolk County, now Chesapeake, VA. He graduated in the class of 1969 from I. C. Norcom High School in the Portsmouth, VA. After graduation he took a job at Norfolk Veneer for 2 weeks and said “Nope this is not for me.” and soon moved to New York where he took a job at Chase Manhattan Bank as a Broker. While in New York he married and from that union his two children were born.

Elton left New York and returned to Virginia to raise his children. A lover of trains he began working with the Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt Line Railroad. During his 29 years he worked as a Brakeman, Conductor, Engineer and a Train Master. He also served as a General Chairmen of the United Transportation Union 854 for 10 years.

Elton’s soulmate and wife Elvira, whom he lovingly called EJ., have shared many years of happiness together and married in August of 2017. Elton was the Pittsburg Steelers #1 fan. He also loved chopping wood and his morning routine of having his coffee with 2 packs of Nabs. He was a friendly, quiet, fun loving soul referred to often by his nicknames “Slow Motion” and “Top Shelf “.

He was predeceased by his parents Frank & Florence Williams, his sisters Dora Porter, Annie Bynum and a brother George Williams. Elton leaves to cherish in memory, his loving wife Elvira Johnson-Williams, Children Garland Williams and Stacy Williams, Raleigh NC, stepchildren Demetria Wilson, Chesapeake, VA and William Johnson (Kathy), Portsmouth, VA, brother
Erwin Berlin Williams (Ethel), Portsmouth, VA, sister Dorothy Harris, Portsmouth, VA, aunt Captoria Jordan, Portsmouth, VA, 8 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
