(CNN) -- American Lucas Glover has clinched the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow following a playoff with compatriot and good friend Jonathan Byrd.
Glover, the 2009 U.S. Open champion, sank a four-foot putt on the first extra hole to claim his third PGA Tour victory but first since his famous success at Bethpage Black.
The 31-year-old carded a final round three-under-par 69 to become the first player in the tournament's history to shoot four rounds in the 60s.
Byrd finished level with Glover on a 72-hole total of 273 (-15), despite only carding a final round level-par 72, while South African Rory Sabbatini posted a best of the day seven-under-par 65 to finish a stroke behind in third position.
Glover, whose only other career success came in the 2005 Children's Miracle Network Classic, told the official PGA Tour website: "I'm elated -- absolutely elated -- especially to win here.

"There are a lot of friends at Quail Hollow, a lot of support. Any time you win you're pleased -- it means you beat everybody.
"You did what you set out to do on Thursday morning when the bell rang. Against this field and on this golf course and in a tournament of this magnitude, I'm thrilled," he added.
The win means Glover picks up 500 FedEX Cup points and moves up to 27th place in the FedEx Cup Standings -- a welcome result after claiming just one top 10 position in the last year and missing the cut in his past three starts.
Meanwhile, playoff defeat deprived in-form Byrd of a three victory in his last 12 tournament starts.
