The case remains unsolved, and Jarrod Johnston’s fate remains a mystery.
Background
Jarrod Johnston was born on August 21, 1988.
He lived with his three siblings, father, and stepmother in Franklin, Kentucky. The Johnston family had relocated to Kentucky from Yazoo City, Mississippi.
And at the time of his disappearance, Jarrod had friends and a girlfriend living there who can attest to that fact.
Jarrod’s friends and family remember him as outgoing, spontaneous, and having an incredible laugh.
He was passionate about music, especially playing the guitar. Jarrod also loved theater and poetry.
At the time of his disappearance, Jarrod had earned a full-ride scholarship to any state school because of his high grades and ACT scores.
Disappearance
Jarrod and his family took a 500-mile drive from their home in Franklin, Kentucky, to Yazoo City, Mississippi, on June 4, 2007.
Jarrod’s parents dropped him off at his friend’s house on July 7, 2007, not knowing that he was going to stay there for a few weeks. His friend’s parents were similarly unaware and took him back to his grandmother’s residence.
Jarrod soon got into a heated argument with his grandmother over his unplanned stay at her house. She had recently undergone hip surgery and was afraid Jarrod would steal her painkiller pills, as he had done in the past.
Jarrod stormed off at 3:00 pm with a black duffel bag, backpack, and walnut-colored Ibanez guitar in a black carrying case.
His sister went after him and tried to calm him down, telling him to call their parents, who live in Kentucky.
Jarrod never returned home, and his family has not heard from him since. His grandmother informed them about the situation back in Kentucky.
They decided to give him space and time to cool off before assuming he would go stay with his girlfriend, who was living in Yazoo City.
Jarrod’s parents called the police three weeks after he never came home to file a missing person report.
Investigation
Jarrod left his wallet, complete with his ID and social security card, in his girlfriend’s car in January 2007. His cell phone was nowhere to be found when he vanished.
Jarrod’s friend’s mother told his family she saw him walking through downtown Yazoo City fifteen hours after dropping him off with his grandmother on July 8, 2007.
A cousin told Jarrod’s family that he had seen him in a mall parking lot in Jackson, Mississippi, back in December 2007.
He wasn’t aware at the time that Jarrod was missing and lost sight of him when he turned away for a moment.
His family then reported this discovery to the sheriff’s office and drove down to see the mall in March 2008.
The cashier at the jewelry store in the mall distinctly remembered when Jarrod had come in to pick out an engagement ring in December 2007.
His card was swiped but rejected, so he told her that he would come back with another one, but he never returned.
Jarrod had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and only had a three-month supply of medication when he disappeared.
Before his junior year, he also spent time in a rehabilitation center for drug abuse.
