For the people and their families that was apart of the collapsing Bridge in Baltimore my heart, thoughts and prayers are with you all…🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

A container ship crashed into one of the bridge's pillars, causing a wide section of the bridge to fall into the Patapsco River. According to CNN's Melissa Alonso, Elizabeth Wolfe and Lauren Mascarenhas, at least six construction workers were believed to be repairing the roadway at the time of the collapse, and "several vehicles are believed to have fallen into the water."

Per CNN, the ship's crew warned of a loss of power prior to making impact, which Maryland Gov. Wes Moore cited as having helped accelerate the response time of emergency personnel.

"We're thankful that between the mayday and the collapse, that we had officials who were able to begin to stop the flow of traffic so more cars were not on the bridge," Moore told reporters.

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski told CNN that rescue efforts are underway and pointed to the "difficult" conditions for divers and those who fell into the river.

"We're talking about a deep channel port," he said. "It's 40, 50 feet of water, strong currents. The weather is windy, the water is cold. And so we certainly worry about those who are in the water, not to mention the fall from the bridge."

The Key Bridge served a number of critical purposes, aiding commuters on their trips in and out of Baltimore and providing others with a more expedient path around the metro area along the East Coast. Its proximity to Baltimore's port makes it integral in shipping as well.
