Lillie Doris Bond – Metropolitan Funeral
On Sunday, August 27, 2023, the Spirit of the Living God, in His infinite wisdom, called our loved one, Lillie Doris Bond, as His own, to be at peace forever.
Lillie, born on June 18, 1930, was a native of Bertie County, Windsor, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Jerome and Sarah Speller. Lillie spent her adult life in Norfolk, Virginia.
Lillie was married to the late Johnie A. Bond, Sr. for 62 loving years. In that union was born three sons, Johnie “Jay” Bond Jr. (Regina Eley), Jeffrey A. Bond (Regina A.), Rick A. Bond (NaNa), and one daughter, Jenise A. Bond Bond (Michael).
Lillie graduated from W.S. Ethridge High School. She was a graduate of the Norfolk City Schools and Norfolk General Hospital School of Practical Nursing. Her career included tenures at local assisting living skills facilities, nursing homes, Norfolk Community Hospital, and she retired from Norfolk General Hospital as a Recovery Room Specialist.
Lillie was an avid reader, writer, community leader, and an advocate for equal opportunities and social justice. With the integration of public schools in the 1960s, Black children had to rely on the public bus service, and not a school-sponsored bus, if enrolled at Azalea Gardens Junior High School. Lillie met with the Norfolk Public School Board and spearheaded a winning policy effort that ensured that Black students would in fact have a school-sponsored bus that took them to and from school. Throughout the years, Lillie’s many letters-to-the-editor were published in the local newspapers.
Lillie was a strong support of public service, which she instilled in each of her four children. She was a member of the Chesapeake Gardens Civic League. As a member of Tot and Teen, Inc., Lillie understood the importance and value of education, community service, and the fine arts.
Lille was a longtime member of Queen Street Baptist Church, was actively engaged in Bible Study classes, and was a member of the gospel choir: The Disciple Singers. Her hobbies included baking, reading, gardening, playing the piano, painting, writing short stories, knitting, playing Bingo, fishing, and she was an avid bowler.
She enjoyed spending quality time with her grandchildren: Jeffrey Bond Jr., Joy Thompson (Carlos), Justin Bond (Tyesha), Candace Bond-Theriault (Scott), Lisa Wairoto (Joe), Jonah Bond, and great grandchildren: Laila Thompson, Elijah Thompson, Jazmin Bond, Jeffrey Bond lll, Jordan Bond, Joshua Wairoto, Cameron Bond, and Lewis Bond-Theriault. She took great pride in all of their accomplishments and their positive strength of character.
Special acknowledgement of sincere gratitude for the loving care and support provided by Ms. Nadine Jones, and most recently, the staff of The Gardens of Virginia Beach.
As a positive role model for so many, Lillie was a beacon of hope for those that needed support, but above all, she loved her family, including her sisters Ruby Williams and Cleonis “Dot” Speller, and her late bothers: Johnnie Louis Speller, Joseph Speller, James Speller, William Speller, Carl Speller, and Melvin Speller, daughter-in-love Teresa Bond, and her loving nieces, nephews, and friends beyond measure.
Lovingly submitted, The Family
