Michael Whitaker – Metropolitan Funeral

Don’t cry for me, Don’t shed a tear, The time I’ve shared with you will always be, and when I’m gone, Please carry on, Don’t cry for me!

On Sunday, June 4, 2023, the gates of Heaven opened and welcomed home a remarkable son, Michael Whitaker, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend!  Michael was born on April 15, 1959, in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late Charlie and Emma Whitaker.  He was predeceased by both of his parents, three brothers, Charles, Stanley, and Louis Whitaker, and two sisters, Barbara J. Henderson, and Silva L. Richmond.

Michael was a self-taught, music enthusiast.  Throughout his school-aged years, he honed his musical skills and talents by participating in the band.  Michael was so gifted that while attending elementary school, he played in the Jacox Junior High School Band.  While in junior high school, his musical abilities allowed him to be selected as a member of the “Marching Bookers.”  This momentum didn’t stop, as a high school student, Michael played tuba for the Spartan Legion.  As an adult, his love for music expanded.  If he was intrigued by an instrument, he taught himself how to play it!

After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School, Michael joined the United States Army and served as a medic.  His love and compassion for people aspired him to embark upon various medical occupations.  Michael served his community as an Emergency Medical Technician, paramedic, and firefighter.  His thirst for learning led him to further his education.  While attending Tidewater Community College, he served as the Vice President of the Student Government and President of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.  In 2000, Michael proudly earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Information Systems Technology specializing in Network Engineering.

Michael’s love for the craft led him to become a member of Psalm #23 where he held the position of Senior Warden.  The life of the party, Michael would accept any challenge in chess, checkers, bid whist, spades, fishing, and music trivia.  In addition, Michael was a lifelong N.Y. Giants fan!

He leaves to cherish his memory; Bruce (LaFonda) Hollowell of Virginia Beach, VA, Pierre Hollowell of Texas; two daughters, Yanique White (Johnathan) of Virginia, and Jessica Hollowell of Norfolk, VA; one brother, Leroy Whitaker (Brenda) of Virginia Beach, VA; two sisters, Annie Ruth Gilbert of Brooklyn, New York and Michele Whitaker of Norfolk, VA; eight grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
