NBA Trade Rumors: Isaac Okoro Most Likely Cavs Player to Be Moved at 2024 Deadline | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Fourth-year wing Isaac Okoro might be deemed expendable if the Cleveland Cavaliers decide to make a trade at the last minute, according to Cleveland.com's Chris Fedor (via HoopsHype).
Michael Scotto of HoopHype reported Monday that Okoro "is expected to draw interest at the trade deadline." He added the New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, Indiana Pacers, Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks have all shown varying degrees of interest.
Okoro is averaging 8.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 0.9 steals this season. He's also shooting a career-high 38.5 percent from beyond the arc, quite an improvement from his 29.0 percent clip as a rookie in 2020-21.
Between his growth as the shooter and a hot streak that has catapulted Cleveland to second in the Eastern Conference at 32-16, the need to deal the 23-year-old has seemingly diminished.
But president of basketball operations Koby Altman could decide reinforcements are required to get the Cavs to the next level. Okoro's contract status would be another consideration.
The 6'5" forward is eligible for restricted free agency in the offseason, and Scotto cited one general manager who believes he could earn up to $14 million on his next contract.
Looking forward, Evan Mobley, Donovan Mitchell and Caris LeVert are all poised to hit the open market in 2025, and Jarrett Allen will be a free agent in 2026. Team owner Dan Gilbert hasn't shied away from spending big, but the more restrictive salary cap structure will likely force Altman to make some difficult decisions. He can't just keep running it back every year.
Trading Okoro instead of giving him a raise could be one of those tough choices.
