NFL Rumors: Jets Have 'Zero' Interest in Jamal Adams Contract After Seahawks Release | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
It doesn't seem like there will be a reunion between safety Jamal Adams and the New York Jets.
Connor Hughes of SNY reported the AFC East team has "zero interest" in the veteran "despite social media rumblings that Adams wants to come back." The report came after the Seattle Seahawks announced they released the safety on Tuesday.
Adams wasn't the only player the Seahawks released. They also moved on from safety Quandre Diggs and tight end Will Dissly as the team began the early stages of shaping the roster under new head coach Mike Macdonald.
As for Adams, Brady Henderson of ESPN noted he would have made a non-guaranteed $16.5 million in 2024 and count $26.9 million against the salary cap. Henderson called those numbers "untenable amounts for a player who has been unable to stay on the field or get to the quarterback since his stellar Seattle debut in 2020."
There was a time when Adams was one of the best defensive backs in the league.
New York selected him with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft, and he wasted little time making an impact as a Pro Bowler in his second and third seasons. He was also a First-Team All-Pro selection in his third year.
However, the Jets traded him to the Seahawks ahead of the 2020 campaign instead of giving him a contract extension. It was a fruitful move for Seattle at first, as he was a Pro Bowler in his first season with the team and tallied 87 tackles, five passes defended and two interceptions in his second.
Injuries largely derailed his time with the NFC West team from there, and he appeared in one game in 2022 and nine games in 2023.
The past season also included some controversy even after he returned from the quad injury that cost him most of the 2022 campaign.
"Adams' first game back from that injury in Week 4 of last season was cut short by a first-quarter concussion, which led to an outburst by the safety against the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant (UNC) who had examined him on the sideline," Henderson wrote. "Adams apologized for that incident and wasn't fined, though the NFL docked him $50,000 after another run-in with a UNC two weeks later.
"Adams' 2023 season was further marred by controversy when he disparaged an NFL reporter's wife on X in December."
While the Jets will surely want to make some moves in anticipation of a potential playoff run with the return of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, bringing back Adams at this stage of his career likely won't be one of them.
