Oliver Miller Arrest: Ex-NBA Player Will Pay the Price for Violent Crime | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Former first-round pick Oliver Miller played basketball in many places after his NBA career fizzled out, but the 41-year-old's next stop is a place he doesn't want to visit.
According to a report from the Associated Press, Miller has pleaded guilty to assault charges stemming from an incident in which he attacked his girlfriend's brother after a cookout back in April
Prosecutors allege that Miller and his girlfriend's brother got into an argument that resulted in Miller hitting him in the head repeatedly with a gun. It took 11 staples to close the man's wounds.
Miller was handed multiple charges, and he pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree assault and carrying a handgun in Tuesday in a Maryland court. Sentencing is set for Dec. 16.
The AP report claims that guidelines call for Miller to spend as many as nine years in prison. But because he did not have a criminal record before the incident, his time in prison is likely to be reduced.
Regardless, this is a regrettable turn in Miller's life, which includes a basketball career that was both disappointing and oddly prolific.
Miller entered the NBA in 1992 when he was selected with the 22nd overall pick by the Phoenix Suns. He played a couple years in Phoenix before moving over to the Detroit Pistons, and he would go on to be in and out of the NBA for the next decade. He played overseas in places like Greece, Poland and Italy, and even had a stint with the Harlem Globetrotters in 2000 and 2001.
Miller's last stop in the NBA was in the 2003-2004 season with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He averaged just over 10 minutes of playing time per game and averaged fewer than three points and three rebounds.
Though Miller may have lived an honest life before this incident, he is lucky that he is not in hotter water right now. He caused some serious damage to his girlfriend's brother, but it could have been a lot worse.
As it is, he is going to pay the price.
