Oregon hiring Will Stein from UTSA as offensive coordinator: Source

Oregon is expected to hire UTSA co-offensive coordinator Will Stein as its offensive coordinator, a team source tells The Athletic. On3 first reported the news. Here is what you need to know.

  • The 33-year-old Stein joined the UTSA staff in 2020. After two years as wide receivers coach, he was promoted to co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach this season.
  • UTSA is 12th nationally in scoring at 38.7 points per game. That’s an improvement from last season despite the loss of star running back Sincere McCormick.
  • He replaces Kenny Dillingham, who became the head coach at Arizona State.

What it means for Oregon

Lanning will have his second offensive coordinator in as many seasons, both under the age of 35. Stein has risen quickly in the coaching profession. He played quarterback at Louisville from 2008 to 2012, followed by two years on staff there and three years as a staffer at Texas.

At UTSA, Stein helped developed all-conference receivers Zakhari Franklin and Joshua Cephus before his promotion to co-offensive coordinator. This year’s team led Conference USA in scoring and put up almost identical rushing numbers to last season despite the loss of McCormick.

Stein also spent 2018-19 as offensive coordinator at Lake Travis High School in Texas, where he coached Texas quarterback Hudson Card, who entered the transfer portal Monday. Perhaps there could be a reunion if Bo Nix does not return to Oregon.

What it means for UTSA

It’s the second year in a row that UTSA’s play caller has landed a Power 5 job, after Barry Lunney Jr. went to Illinois last season. The No. 25 Roadrunners, who are 11-2 and will play Troy in the Cure Bowl after winning the C-USA championship, have already promoted tight ends coach Justin Burke to co-offensive coordinator to fill Stein’s role.
