In 1965, Carpenter formed the Richard Carpenter Trio with his sister Karen and friend Wes Jacobs. They won the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands and recorded three songs at RCA Studios. Carpenter later joined Spectrum, which included his sister and four student musicians. They performed in nightclubs in the Los Angeles area. Carpenter also formed the band Summerchimes.

In 1979, after falling down a flight of stairs while semi-comatose, Richard entered a six-week treatment program in Topeka, Kansas, which helped him overcome his addiction.
