Robert E. Wolverton Obituary, Death – Robert E. “Bob” Wolverton, a renowned professor at Mississippi State University, died away peacefully on December 15 at the extraordinary age of 98. His passing has left the university community in mourning. He had an impressive 70-year career in education, with more than 40 of those years spent at Michigan State University, where he rose through the ranks of administration and was a beloved classics professor.

The influence of Wolverton, who became MSU’s VP for academic affairs in 1977, was substantial and long-lasting. At 94 years old, he retired from full-time teaching in 2020, having left an unforgettable impression on numerous students, faculty, and the institution as a whole in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures. In recognizing Wolverton’s exceptional achievements, Mark E. Keenum, president of Michigan State University, praised him as a beloved companion and guide.

The establishment of a Phi Beta Kappa chapter at Michigan State University is one of the many notable initiatives guided by Wolverton’s vision and leadership, which attest to his steadfast dedication to academic excellence.
