The Rocky Mount teacher fight has sparked a debate about how teachers should handle disciplinary issues.
The incident, which occurred on Monday morning, involved a juvenile student and Xaviera Steele, the substitute teacher, who got into a heated argument over the confiscation of a cell phone during the break between the first period and the Connections Intervention period.
The argument quickly escalated, and a video circulating online showed the student attempting to grab the phone from Steele’s hand before the altercation turned physical.
The incident has since been investigated by police and the school system, with no charges filed at this time.
The video of the Rocky Mount teacher fight went viral on the internet. A video sent to WRAL shows the two exchanging heated words over the phone before things quickly escalated.
The student argued that the rules should apply to everyone and demanded the return of the phone.
However, the teacher maintained that the rules do apply to everyone and that she confiscated the phone for violating school policy.
As the situation continued to escalate, the student attempted to grab the phone from the teacher’s hand while making a phone call.
“Don’t touch me,” the substitute teacher can be heard saying several times. But the confrontation didn’t stop there, and things quickly became physical, with the two swinging at each other.
Eventually, the substitute teacher ended up on top of the student.
Although no injuries were reported, the incident sparked a social media frenzy, with the substitute teacher’s actions drawing criticism and public support.
The school district has stated that no charges have been filed as of Monday afternoon, and they are currently investigating the incident along with local law enforcement.
It’s worth noting that NCPS policy allows employees to defend themselves and reasonably restrain a student if they are attacked.
However, it’s unclear what led to the altercation and why the teacher needed to confiscate the student’s phone.
In an interview with WRAL News, another substitute teacher, Bettie Atcherson, weighed in on how to handle tense situations in the classroom.
“As the adult, you have to contain yourself and not let them take you that far,” Atcherson said. “If you’re kind to kids, even the toughest kids, if you’re kind to them and show that you love them are concerned about their well-being … 9 times out of 10, you won’t have a lot of problems.”
Despite the controversy surrounding the incident, it’s important to remember that there are always exceptions when it comes to handling difficult situations in the classroom.
The incident has also prompted a discussion about the proper training and support for teachers in handling disciplinary situations in the classroom.
As the investigation continues, it’s hoped that both the teacher and student can come to a peaceful resolution and that this incident will serve as a learning opportunity for everyone involved.
