Savannah Bananas baseball team adopts puppy abandoned at stadium

The Savannah Bananas said 7-week-old Daisy was left in the Grayson Stadium parking lot in late April with no tags, collar or microchip. The team's president and his wife have adopted her, and she has been named the team's bat dog for the 2016 season.

A Georgia minor league baseball team has rescued a puppy that was found abandoned outside their stadium two weeks ago.

The Savannah Bananas said 7-week-old Daisy was left in the Grayson Stadium parking lot in late April with no tags, collar or microchip. Daisy was discovered near the office door by a staff member as they left for an appointment. Team President Jared Orton and his wife Kelsey have since adopted her, the team said.

“It was just meant to be that we’d have a team dog as part of our staff,” said Orton. “We took Daisy to the vet and aside from being hungry and dehydrated, she was in pretty good health.”

The team said Orton has put Daisy to work, helping ship out Bananas merchandise and greeting visitors who come by the stadium. She has also been named the team’s Bat Dog for the 2016 season.

“We aren’t sure how big she’ll get, so it’s hard to say if she’ll be able to pick up a bat or just coach first base,” said Orton, “but as she grows, she’ll be a fixture at the ballpark.”

The Bananas are part of the Coastal Plain League, which has 16 teams in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
