Veryl J. Wells Scott was born on May 6, 1952 to the late Larry and Ruth Wells, and was the youngest of four girls. She was educated in Lee County, South Carolina public schools and was one of four brave students to integrate Lynchburg High School before graduating as valedictorian and prom queen from Mount Pleasant High School in Elliott, SC. After high school, she matriculated to South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, SC, and after obtaining her Bachelor’s degree, enrolled in the Howard University School of Law, graduating with a Juris Doctorate degree. While at Howard, Veryl participated in the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) and upon graduation was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Veryl had a robust and varied professional career, working for the state of Missouri, the city of Kansas City Missouri, and Los Angeles County governments, as well as teaching law and real estate on the University level. She was a member of the Virginia State Bar and was admitted to practice in several courts. Veryl gave back and built community through membership in multiple civic organizations, including The Links, The Jaycees, Jack and Jill of America, the NAACP, and her beloved Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Her professional passion was family law. Veryl specialized in juvenile justice, representing and helping countless troubled teens and restoring families. Family meant everything to Veryl, and she was a loving and dedicated mother, who balanced the responsibilities and rewards of motherhood and career. When her third child was born with autism, Veryl maintained her law practice and committed herself to providing developmentally appropriate care and education for Drew. She did it with all the love, professionalism, and grace in the world. She gave her all to her family from the beginning until the end, and they loved her with all their hearts. Veryl accepted Christ at a young age, growing up as a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Lynchburg, SC. She later became a member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Hampton, VA and an associate member of Berean Baptist Church in Lovejoy, GA.  She will be welcomed in heaven by those who preceded her in death, including her precious son, Andrew “Drew” Scott, her sisters, Ruth “Jackie” Lowe and Dedoyer “Dee” Wells, and her parents, Larry Sr. and Ruth G. Wells. Veryl is survived by her husband, Leon L. Scott Sr.; her sons, Woodrow “Woody” Scott (Deitra), and Frederick “Ricky” Scott (Amanda); her step-son, Leon L. Scott Jr., and step-daughter, Helen “Peachy” Scott; her sister, Rev. Dr. Carolyn “Vonne” Johnson (Willie); her brother, Larry “Junior” Wells Jr.; her grandchildren, Woodrow, Winston, Zora, Zuri, Ryder, Chris, Sasha, Michael, Michelle, Jessica, and Xavier; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
