Siege of Kobane Kills Hundreds

TEMPO.CO, Baghdad - Pentagon has confirmed that US-led air strikes have killed hundreds of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Syria (ISIL) fighters around the Syrian town of Kobane. However, the town near Turkey's border could still fall to the Sunni rebel group.

The US-led coalition have launched about 50 air strikes on the Kurdish town of Kobane in the past 48 hours. Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said the bad weather in Iraq had freed up coalition firepower to attack Kobane targets. Regardless, he added the situation was fluid, given that the Kurdish militia still controlling the town.

"We know we've killed several hundreds of them," Kirby said. "The more they want it, the more resources they apply to it, the more targets we have to hit."

The siege of Kobane has become a focus of the US-led effort to halt ISIS. Also, the United Nations has warned of a massacre if the town falls to the rebels, who now control nearly half of it.
