Sindhutai Sapkal was a highly appreciated Indian social worker consequentially recognized for raising over 1500 orphan children in India.

The social worker was awarded a coveted fourth-highest civilian award of the Republic of India named Padma Shree in 2021 for her contributions.

Until this day, she is considered one of the most remarkable figures in India for her noteworthy social works as a social activist. 

She is notably known as "Maai" which means mother and like a mother, she dedicated her entire life to helping orphans and needy children.

In fact, she was considered as the Mother Teresa of Maharashtra and to this date is one of the most eminent figures in Maharashtra.

Unfortunately, we are extremely heartbroken to learn that she is no more among us. Yet, her works and memories will always remain immortal.

Sindhutai Sapkal was reportedly married to her husband Shrihari Sapkal, then 32 years old man, when she was just 12 years old.

Despite being under the clutches of child marriage, she had the utmost passion for helping the needy ones since her early days.

She was married to her husband under the name Harbaji at such a young age due to extreme poverty and various family responsibilities.

By the time, the social activist turned twenty, she had already given birth to three sons. She was pregnant with a baby girl at the age of 20.

Her husband had beaten, kicked and left her to die when she was nine months pregnant with the girl child provoked by the rumours of her affair.

She bore a girl in such a miserable state in a cow shelter in a semi-conscious state outside their house on the night of the 14th of October 1973.

It is such a heartwrenching thing to discover but due to the exhaustion, she passed out after cutting the umbilical cord with the stone lying nearby.

Since her husband and other family members had abandoned her, she returned to her mother's village after she awoke from passing out.

The social worker has had a fair share of struggles even after returning to her mother's village for everyone rejected and hated her.

Let alone the villagers, even her own biological mother had shut the door in her face. Yet, she didn't give up with a resilient heart.

She left her daughter Mamta in the care of the Dagduseth Halwai Trust in Pune for she didn't have any money and sources to take care of her.

To survive she begged on the streets and railway platforms. In fact, she spent her night at cemeteries to prevent being picked by men at night.

The remarkable social worker Sindhutai Sapkal's cause of death is uncovered suffering a heart attack on the 4th of January 2022 at the age of 74.

She breathed for the last time at the Galaxy Care Hospital at 8:30 p.m in Pune. She was apparently admitted to the hospital more than a month ago.
