Steven Avery Case: Making A Murderer Netflix Series Explained

Who is Steven Avery?

According to reports, Steven Avery is serving a life sentence in jail for a murder he executed on October 31. 

He is famously known as the Winconsin man who committed a murder. He is trying to seek a new trial alongside his lawyer with the new evidence to prove that Avery’s conviction in the murder is tainted.

It was confirmed that the victim murdered on October 31, 2005, was identified to be a photographer named Teresa Halbach. A new Netflix series, “Making a Murderer,” focuses on the death of Halbach. 

During the court’s hearing, the defense attorney Kathleen Zellner claimed that the new evidence led to another person who had appeared in the show. The person was identified as Steven’s nephew Bobby Dassey. 

Zellner wrote in a statement for post-conviction relief filed Tuesday in Manitowoc County court in Wisconsin. Zellner said that two new witnesses were introduced in Steven Avery’s case and with new evidence. 

Zellner added, “The rush to judgment and tunnel vision that led to the arrest, prosecution and conviction of Mr. Avery is exposed by these new witnesses who provide new and undisputed evidence that directly links Bobby Dassey to the murder of Teresa Halbach and the framing of Mr. Avery.”

As per Zellner’s previous claims in Avery’s case, she always seems to raise the name of Dassey. Dassey’s brother, Brendan, was the co-defendant in Avery’s case. 

In a statement, she wrote that her client, Steven Avery, doesn’t need to prove who committed the crime to get relief from the court. She added that this is not her client’s intention or purpose.

She said that Avery didn’t receive a fair trial in the case. According to Avery’s lawyers, they didn’t receive all the evidence related to the case. They said they weren’t aware of the phone call made to Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office by Thomas Sowinski, a newspaper deliverer.

Thomas said that he saw Bobby and another person pushing Halbach’s vehicle into Steven’s garage, and later the police found the vehicle from there. However, bone fragments and blood samples were found on Avery’s property. 

A bullet with Halbach’s DNA was found in Avery’s garage. Steven claimed that the blood samples and bone fragments were planted in his garage. 

Sowinski approached Avery’s legal team in December 2020 after he got to know that Halbach’s car was found at Avery’s garage. After the new evidence and witnesses were brought, the jury decided that Avery should be granted a new trial. 

Sowinski’s ex-girlfriend, Devon Novak, identified that the person’s voice on the call was Sowinski. In the call, he explained what happened. 

A witness named Kevin Rahmlow approached Avery’s defense team and reported that he found Halbach’s vehicle parked at a different location around November 4, 2005. He added that the vehicle might have been moved to Avery’s garage and discovered on November 5.

The court, on this behalf, opened the case, but they found no evidence that could lead to a different side of the story. Previously, his appeal for a trial was rejected in July 2021.
