“Tequila Sunrise” by Eagles

Tequila Sunrise, as you may already know, is the name of a popular cocktail.  However, the writers of this song flipped a different meaning from the term.  In this particular piece, it actually refers to its male subject enjoying tequila, a type of booze, throughout the night. Indeed he stays up so late that he basically greets the “sunrise” with a drink in his hand.

But there is more to the story than that. For instance, this guy is presented as “a hired hand”. And the album this song was originally featured on, “Desperado”, operated along a motif based on western movies, i.e. films that featured cowboys. Thus we deduce that the character featured in this song is in fact a cowboy, and the aforementioned line would indicate he offers his services to employers. But these tropes concurrently point to the music profession the Eagles were engaged in, as in referencing themselves.

This becomes more apparent as the song progresses. It is revealed that a certain lady, i.e. a romantic interest, is also part of the narrative. Moreover the entire scene is arguably set in a place like a drinking bar. We can deduce this because Glenn Frey has stated that the “shot of courage” mentioned in the last verse actually is based on a running joke the band had about using tequila to alleviate the fear of approaching a lady. In other words, a “shot of courage” is actually a shot of tequila. Thus we know that the last verse at least – whether the protagonist be a cowboy or a musician – is logically taking place in a communal setting where drinks are served.

Conclusion

So if nothing else, what becomes obvious when studying “Tequila Sunrise” and other tracks which were released with it is that the Eagles pictured themselves as individuals akin to modern-day cowboys. And it’s hard to classify this song as one that idealizes drunkenness, as even when they do use tequila to talk to women “the right words never come”. So ultimately this track, under its simplest explanation, is based on the singer acknowledging that tequila is in fact a regular part of his life.
