Manny Machado Is Representing Dominican Republic for WBC: He Made His Father Proud

Baltimore Orioles’ three-time All-Star chose to represent his family and heritage over birthplace.  He will be playing the first round at Marlins Park in his hometown, just a few miles from Brito Miami Private School, ultimately making WBC even more special for Machado.

In Miami, the Dominicans began the defense of their 2013 WBC title, which was an emotional occasion for Machado. He also got a hug and a kiss from his father, Manuel, when they reunited at Ed Smith Stadium.

He had an emotional conversation with his dad after a long time of reunion. Manny Machado's father said he got chills just watching Manny wearing those colors and representing something big for him.

In a reply, the player says it’s all about family. Machado admitted that all you have in life is family at the end of the day. He was excited to be there to be at home representing something meaningful after Orioles camp before joining the Dominican team.

The rising player is looking forward to putting on that uniform dedicating his grandfather, knowing that he will always be there for him, and is looking from above.

Manny Machado's grandfather died six months before the Orioles made Machado the third overall pick in the 2010 draft. He was the one to teach Manny how to bunt.

The player announced his WBC commitment last April. The decision was not surprising for Dominican Republic manager Tony Pena, who knows Machado's strong connections with his heritage.
