WWE Rumors on Seth Rollins' Injury, Brock Lesnar's Return and Roman Reigns' Schedule | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from the WWE Universe.
Rollins Reportedly Suffered Legitimate Leg Injury on Raw
Seth Rollins reportedly suffered a legitimate leg injury during his successful World Heavyweight Championship defense against Jinder Mahal on Monday night's episode of Raw.
According to Wade Keller of PWTorch, multiple WWE backstage sources indicated that that when Rollins appeared to tweak his leg or knee during the match, it was a real injury and not something done for storyline purposes.
Keller added that Rollins was helped to the backstage area after Raw went off the air, and while he was eventually able to put weight on his leg and walk on his own, he had a limp.
Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News) followed up on the report, noting that Rollins is set to undergo an MRI and it won't be known if his injury is minor or more serious until the results come in.
If Rollins' injury is something that keeps him out for an extended stretch, it couldn't come at a much worse time for The Visionary or WWE as a whole.
Rollins has been world heavyweight champion for nearly eight months, and all signs point toward him carrying the title into WrestleMania 40.
It also seems likely that WWE's plan is for CM Punk to win the Royal Rumble and challenge Rollins for the title in the main event of Night 1 of WrestleMania.
WWE has done an excellent job of the building the rivalry between Rollins and Punk, and fans are excited to see them settle their differences in the ring.
Neither Punk nor Rollins have ever competed in a pre-advertised WrestleMania main event, so they are both trending toward defining moments in their respective careers.
Because of that, fans and peers are likely pulling for Rollins to be okay and able to wrestle on the Grandest Stage of Them All.
Lesnar Reportedly Set to Return to WWE TV Soon
Brock Lesnar has not been seen on WWE programming since losing to Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam in August, but his absence reportedly may not last much longer.
According to Meltzer (h/t Felix Upton of Ringside News), Lesnar will make his WWE return "very soon."
No other specifics were given, but with the Royal Rumble premium live event just over one week away, it is fair to wonder if Lesnar could be a surprise entrant in the men's Royal Rumble match.
Lesnar competed in last year's Rumble and was eliminated by Bobby Lashley before going on to lose a singles match to Lashley at Elimination Chamber by disqualification.
The Beast Incarnate then defeated Omos at WrestleMania 39 before entering into a three-match feud with Rhodes that saw Rhodes take two out of three.
After losing to Cody at SummerSlam, Lesnar shocked the WWE Universe by shaking hands with The American Nightmare, which suggests he could return as a babyface.
Lesnar likely wouldn't win the Royal Rumble if he competes in it, but the match could be used to set the stage for a WrestleMania rivalry against an opponent such as Gunther, Drew McIntyre, Shinsuke Nakamura or someone else.
If Lesnar does not come back at the Rumble, the Elimination Chamber premium live event in Perth, Australia, next month is a possibility as well.
Since every indication is that Lesnar is still under contract with WWE, the company will undoubtedly want him back for a major match at WrestleMania since he is one of WWE's top stars, and he would add more star power to what is already shaping up to be a stacked card.
Reigns Reportedly Not Scheduled for Multiple PLEs
Roman Reigns is scheduled to defend the undisputed WWE Universal Championship at the Royal Rumble, but it reportedly looks as though that may be his final match before WrestleMania 40.
According to Meltzer (h/t Mukherjee), Reigns is not planned to appear at Elimination Chamber on Feb. 24, nor is he being advertised for the May 4 Backlash premium live event in France.
Reigns has wrestled sparingly since last year's WrestleMania 39 and has defended the undisputed WWE universal title in televised matches only twice during that timeframe.
His third defense since WrestleMania 39 will take place at the Rumble when he faces Randy Orton, LA Knight and AJ Styles in a Triple Threat match.
Assuming Reigns retains, there are two glaring options for him to go up against at WrestleMania 40 in the form of Cody Rhodes and The Rock.
Rhodes has seemed like his likely opponent ever since WrestleMania 39 when interference from Solo Sikoa prevented Cody from beating Reigns in the main event.
However, The Rock recently made a surprise appearance on an episode of Raw and made a clear allusion to Reigns by mentioning "The Head of the Table."
Reigns vs. The Rock is the biggest possible dream match in wrestling today, and if WWE is able to make it happen, it is hard to envision the company turning that opportunity down.
Whoever Reigns faces at WrestleMania, it will undoubtedly headline Night 2 and it will be among the biggest matches in all of wrestling this year.
