Daniel Melvin Ballance – Metropolitan Funeral
Daniel Melvin Ballance, 70, was called from labor to rest on September 16, 2023. He was born in Winston, NC to the late Myrtha Virginia Bunch and James Henry Ballance. He was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, class of 1971. He was drafted into the Army as a Military Police Officer from 1972-1974. He attended Norfolk State University and studied Gerontology. He later attended Tidewater Community College and received an Associates Degree as a Technical Engineer. He also attended Norfolk Naval Shipyard Apprenticeship Program, a trade/academic based, management preparatory program. He worked as a Rigger Apprentice with the Department of the Navy and served over 20 years in the government and received numerous awards and accolades.
Daniel was an outstanding athlete in all sports, but his true passion was baseball. Daniel was knowledgeable in many things and understood what was happening in the world around him and tried vigorously to teach and pass on that knowledge to his family and friends. As with his brother Coco Bama, enter into a debate with him at your own risk. He went by many names, Skippy, as his mother called him, Daniel B, Roller and Slim.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents Myrtha V. Bunch and James H. Ballance, Three brothers Ernest Edward Ballance, Joseph Leroy Ballance and Kenneth Langley Ballance.
Two Sisters, Linda Ruth Ballance and Hazel Faye Wood. He leaves behind a brother in NY, James Cherry and a sister in GA, Jennifer Denise Ballance.
Daniel leaves behind to cherish his memories his children, Anthony Harris, Darnell Harris, Teanessa Williams, Terrell Jones, Brian Jones and Ebony Fisher; Six grandchildren, Cameron Williams,
Cairo Williams, Ameer Harris, Nashiya Fisher, Nasir Fisher and Akeelah Rogers.
He had close nieces and nephews, Jewel Turley, Paris Ballance, Terrell Gordon, Tymica Bryant, Brian Bunch, Tara Gordon, Terri Wood, Jessica Biagas, Jovonda Williams, Darryl Warren Jr., Tonjia Shelton and a host of grand nieces and nephews along with his close friends Jerome (Uncle Rome) Williams and Charles (Sir Charles) Davis.
To KNOW him is to LIKE him, to LIKE him is to LOVE him. He was knowledgeable, funny and a historian for our family. He will be truly missed.
