Is Out Of The Furnace Based on True Story? Ending Explained

Out Of The Furnace is not based on a true story and is totally a fictitious movie. The movie is about a Pennsylvania steel mill worker Russell Baze and his brother Rodney.

Russell Baze's (played by Christian Bale) brother Rodney (played by Casey Affleck) had lost a bet in horse racing causing him in a huge debt. So, Russell goes to John Petty (Willem Dafoe) who runs bars and illegal games, to pay off part of the debt of his brother and promises to pay the rest later.

While returning back from Petty, he was drunk driving. Hee hits a car and kills people inside it, which leads him to be confined in a prison for 5 years. During his prison time, his girlfriend Lena (Zoe Saldana) leaves him for the police chief Wesley(Forest Whitaker) and his father who has been sick had died.

After his sentence completion, Russell restarts his job at the mill. But Rodney still participated in illegal fighting where he was supposed to lose but he gets enraged and beats up the opponent instead.

Russell finds out about the fighting and tries to talk about it. He suggests Rodney to work in the mill with him. Rodney enraged at his brother yells at him stating as an Iraq war veteran gone for four-tour has turned him too broken for a normal job.

To end his remaining debt, Rodney asks Petty to organize a well-paid fight. Though Petty sets a fight with a sociopathic drug dealer named Harlan DeGroat (Woody Harrelson), he does it reluctantly.

After the fight, DeGroat asks for the rest of the loan but Petty tells him that the fight earlier made them even. DeGroat and his men do leave the place but they ambush Rodney and Petty on the way back home. Petty is shot in the car and Rodney is dragged into the forest where is also shot and killed.

Russell finds a letter from Rodney saying that the fight would be his last and he will work with Russell in the mill. Russell was happy. But the brother doesn't come. Later Wesley tells him about there is no information about the whereabouts of his brother. Now to find his missing brother, Russell sets out to discover what had actually happened.
