John Leguizamo Biography: All About His Illustrious Career

The news that John Leguizamo was among returning cast members asked to join Paramount+ sequel series American Tragedies: Waco – The Trials has fans buzzing. But the portfolio of the acclaimed actor has many other hits that have praised the actor.

Many people would know John Leguizamo from the Ice Age film series. Or fans of adventure and thriller would recognize him from John Wick. But John Leguizamo has been on the road of fame since the 90’s. 

His role as Luigi first brought him in the spotlight along with him appearing in Carlito’s Way. He has been a force to be reckoned with as a Latino star, and has also openly revealed a lot about Hollywood. 

His recent claim that colorism matters and exists a lot within Hollywood and Latin culture also sparked debate. His recent inclusion in the Paramount+ series which is a sequel to Waco was also warmly received.

John Leguizamo’s Career In A Nutshell

John Leguizamo rose to fame when he appeared as Luigi in the 1993 Super Mario Bros. His rampage continued when he appeared in a supporting role in Carlito’s Way in the same year. 

He starred in Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar in 1995 which earned him a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor. This catapulted his career into further stardom.

He then went on to other hits such as Romeo + Juliet, A Brother’s Kiss, Collateral Damage, The Alibi, Repo Men and Jon Wick. The latter films brought him considerable fame to new audiences along with old. 

His accolades

John Leuizamo has appeared in over a century of films and has even produced more than 20 films along with Broadway productions. He has appeared in more than 30 TV performances and shows.

He has even won an Emmy for his role in Freak in 1999.

Voice Acting roles

John has not remained far behind on other diversified roles such as in voice acting. He is the famous voice of Sid the Sloth in the widely acclaimed animated film series, Ice Age. The animated series ran from 2002 till 2016.

He extended animated work further with him appearing as Bruni in Encanto very recently last year. Also, he has worked as a narrator in The Brothers Garcia from 2000 till 2004.

Early Life of John Leguizamo

John’s full name is John Alberto Leguizamo Palaez. He was born on 22 July, 1960 in Bogota, Colombia. His father, Alberto Rudolfo Leguizamo himself had studied at Cinecitta and once aspired to be a film director. 

Financial constraint led him out of it and that was it for his father. 

His family migrated to New York City to live in various neighborhoods. He related to his experience as: 

“It was tough. There were lots of fights. I would walk through a park and be attacked, and I had to defend myself all the time. But this helped me to become funny so that I wouldn’t get hit.”

Education of John

John Leguizamo attended Joseph Pulitzer Middle School and Murry Bergtraum High School. From a very early age he used to write comedy and used to market it to his fellow classmates. 

Fond of talking since school, he was dubbed, “Most Talkative”. He went to theater at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. 

This would not last and John would eventually drop out of university. He would do so to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. He underwent theater classes later at LIU Post and HB Studio.

Debate of John Leguizamo’s ancestral roots

The actor and famed voice-actor has said that his ancestry included Italian, Puerto Rican and Lebanese but it was indicated later by various sources that that was not the case. 

DNA testing stated that genetics of the actor included 59.4% SPanish, 24.5% Indigenous, 3.1% North African and 2.9% Sub-Saharan African. His paternal grandfather has been linked as being Colombian, and his ancestry also includes the Mayor of Bogota.

Avoiding the Sun

Recently, John Leguizamo had a conversation with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He made a confession and revealed that he used to avoid and stay out of sunlight so that he may continue to land roles as an actor.

His deliberate choice of avoiding ultra-rays was due to him remaining a light-skinned Latino actor. He confesses further that he has indeed benefitted from being light-skinned and this is a reality in Hollywood and Latin culture.

“I stayed out of the sun so I could work,” Leguizamo said in the conversation. “I definitely would not go in the sun for years. It was a conscious thing because I could work. And all the Latinos that made it so far, a lot of them were all light-skinned. 

“What happened to all the Afro-Latinos and the majority of indigenous Latinos? They don’t get a shot, you know. So, there’s a lot of things we got to deal with in Hollywood, and we got to fix, and we got to speak out and we got to speak up.”

He has spoken up and wants to bring change to the industry.

Personal Life of John Leguizamo

John Leguizamo got married to actress Yelba Osorio in 1994. The marriage stayed till two years and only lasted till 1996.

His second marriage was with Justine Maurer who was in the Costume department on Carlito’s Way. The marriage was in 2003 and resulted in a son and a daughter. The daughter was named Allegra Sky Leguizamo and the son Ruder Lee Leguizamo. 

The family resides in Manhattan.

Australian comedians Mish Wittrup and Zachary Ruane launched a podcast to pay tribute to John Leguizamo. They consider him their favorite actor and they titled the show, Mish and Zach’s Leguizamarama. 

Every week, the podcast includes a film or a TV show or any other video appearance of John Leguizamo and reviews it. The podcast is also followed by the actor himself.

John regularly re-posts the reviews on shis social media and also answers questions from the creators. The podcast has yet to feature the actor himself, though.
