The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly set to add a significant depth piece to their roster for the stretch run in the form of veteran guard Spencer Dinwiddie.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, Dinwiddie plans to sign with the Lakers after he clears waivers.

The Brooklyn Nets traded Dinwiddie to the Toronto Raptors for Dennis Schroder and Thaddeus Young ahead of Thursday's trade deadline, but they are waiving him so he can potentially land with a contender.

Assuming Dinwiddie does wind up in L.A., the Lakers' roster will be as follows:

  • LeBron James
  • Anthony Davis
  • D'Angelo Russell
  • Austin Reaves
  • Rui Hachimura
  • Spencer Dinwiddie
  • Jarred Vanderbilt
  • Gabe Vincent
  • Taurean Prince
  • Christian Wood
  • Jaxson Hayes
  • Cam Reddish
  • Jalen Hood-Schifino
  • Max Christie
  • Maxwell Lewis
  • Dylan Windler (Two-Way)
  • Skylar Mays (Two-Way)
  • Colin Castleton (Two-Way)

The Lakers' depth chart could look like this once Dinwiddie signs with the team:

  • Center: Anthony Davis/Jaxson Hayes/Christian Wood/Colin Castleton
  • Power Forward: Rui Hachimura/Taurean Prince/Jarred Vanderbilt (INJ)/Christian Wood
  • Small Forward: LeBron James/Taurean Prince/Cam Reddish (INJ)/Maxwell Lewis
  • Shooting Guard: Austin Reaves/Spencer Dinwiddie/Max Christie (INJ)/Jalen Hood-Schifino/Dylan Windler
  • Point Guard: D'Angelo Russell/Spencer Dinwiddie/Gabe Vincent (INJ)/Skylar Mays

While the Lakers were unable to land a big fish to pair with James and Davis at the trade deadline, Dinwiddie figures to play a significant role for the remainder of the regular season and potentially into the playoffs.

The 30-year-old Dinwiddie is a 10th-year veteran who has played for the Detroit Pistons, Nets, Washington Wizards and Dallas Mavericks, and he has been a highly productive player in recent years.

Last season, Dinwiddie split 79 games between the Mavs and Nets, and he enjoyed one of the best years of his career, averaging 17.3 points, 6.5 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 2.3 three-pointers made per game.

His production dipped this season in 48 games with the Nets to 12.6 points, 6.0 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.9 three-pointers made per contest, plus he went from shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 36.9 percent from deep last season to 39.1 percent and 32.0 percent this season.

Despite his downturn, Dinwiddie figures to play significant minutes for the Lakers, either as a sixth man or potentially as the starting point guard ahead of Russell.

Whatever the case, the Lakers have a strong three-guard rotation in place with Dinwiddie, Russell and Reaves, which should lend plenty of support to LeBron AD.

Last season, the James and Davis-led Lakers went to the Western Conference Finals without a third superstar, and it stands to reason they could do something similar in 2023-24.

At 28-26, the Lakers are just ninth in the Western Conference currently, but they have played well lately, winning four their past five games.

The Lakers may be able to make a bigger move during the offseason when they have more first-round picks available to be traded, but for now, Dinwiddie is among the biggest additions they could have possibly made.
