Lexington Regional schedule - The Athletic

The Ivy League is alive and well in this NCAA postseason. Penn dispatched Samford 5-4 at the Auburn Regional behind eight innings on the mound from junior right-hander Cole Zaffiro.

Reliever David Shoemaker escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the ninth. Samford scored twice in its final inning, but Penn first baseman Ben Miller nailed Aaron Walton at third base to end the game.

Penn improved to 34-14 with the victory and will await the winner of a Sunday game between Samford, of the Southern Conference, and Southern Miss, which eliminated Auburn on Saturday. The host Tigers, seeded No. 13 overall in the tournament, went 0-2 at home in the Regional.

Before Friday, Penn had not won a game in the postseason since 1990. It last appeared in the tournament in 1995.

The winner of the Auburn Regional will match in a Super Regional against the winner of the Clemson Regional, in which Tennessee sits in the driver’s seat after it beat host Clemson 6-5 in 14 innings Saturday.

The last Ivy League team to advance to the College World Series was Harvard in 1974.
