Maxwell Bigelow's Men's Swimming Recruiting Profile
Personal Statement
I was resistant at first when my mom suggested that I sign up for a summer rec swim team. I was 12 yrs old and never had a swim lesson before. My first thought was I really did not want to swim on a team where my friends have been swimming since they were 4 yrs old. I was convinced to join winter swim as I knew none of my friends would be there. So my first time swimming it was me at 12 yrs old in the same lane with 5 and 6 yr olds. That summer it seemed that I just took off. I remember finishing a race and looking up at my times and could not believe how well I was doing. After that first summer I knew that I wanted to swim. Swimming for me has been that one sport that I finally connected with and knew I would swim for a very long time.
To be honest it was kind of hard at first when people would come up to me and praise how well I have been swimming. I knew that my main goal was to remain humble and not let all the praise get to my head. I really think my friends, coaches and family would say that I am modest and dedicated. My main goal in being part of a team is to encourage and praise my team mates and only to not focus on myself.
Swimming in high school has made my desire to swim in college that much stronger. I know that I want to go into Mechanical Engineering but I also know that I still want to be a part of a swim team. I know with hard work and dedication I will be able to do both, and of course have a great social life. Therefore, I am looking for a school where I can balance all three.
