Packers vs. 49ers: Updated Odds, Stat Predictions for 2024 NFC Divisional Game | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
The seventh-seeded Green Bay Packers were the NFL's only team to score an upset during an otherwise time version of Wild Card Weekend.
Their reward: A road trip to visit the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers with a spot in the NFC Championship on the line.
Oddsmakers, admittedly, don't love the Packers' chances of pulling another upset. Then again, it wouldn't be the first time this team has surprised anyone, and we all know what can happen in this league on any given Sunday (or Saturday).
The Niners are experienced, well-coached and loaded with talent. They are heavy favorites for a reason.
The Packers, though, travel into this tilt atop a wave of momentum from a fully dominant month of football. They've won four consecutive contests—only one decided by seven points or fewer—and just dismantled the second-seeded Dallas Cowboys in their house by a more-lopsided-than-it-sounds 48-32 count.
This has instant-classic potential, so let's skip past the build-up and dig into the particulars of this matchup with schedule information, the latest odds from DraftKings Sportsbook and stat predictions.
- What: Green Bay Packers at San Francisco 49ers | NFC Divisional Round
- When: Saturday, Jan 20. at 8:15 p.m. ET
- Spread: 49ers -9.5
- Over/under: 50.5
The Packers have leveled-up on both sides of the ball during this run, but their clicking-on-all-cylinders offense drives the majority of their success.
There are several factors behind this surge (33-plus points in three of these four victories), including the rapid maturation of this young receiving corps and Aaron Jones running wild over everyone (119 rushing yards per game during this winning streak). More than anything, though, this has come from the surgically precise play of 25-year-old signal-caller Jordan Love.
His first season as a full-time starter had its ups and downs, but he's ending it on the highest of high notes. His average outing during this run has included 266 passing yards on 73.7 percent passing with 2.5 touchdowns. He's been sacked just twice and last threw an interception in Week 14.
"He's really good at going through his reads and playing the offense to a T," 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa told reporters.
There are, without question, ways the Packers can pull this off. If they take care of the football, establish their ground game and stay on the same page with their aerial attack, they have paths to victory.
We just don't see it going down that way.
Love has had a tremendous run here, but Brock Purdy had a spectacular season that put him in the MVP running. As good as Jones has looked, he's not Christian McCaffrey, the regular-season rushing leader (1,459 yards) and a supplier of 21 touchdowns. Green Bay's young pass-catchers are making plays, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a quarterback who'd rather throw the ball to them than San Francisco's trio of Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle.
San Francisco lost five games all season—three during an injury-riddled stretch, another in Week 18, when this team already had the top seed secured and sat several regulars. Green Bay dropped eight games on the year, including defeats to the Atlanta Falcons, Las Vegas Raiders and New York Giants.
The oddsmakers have this right. The Niners will win, probably by double digits.
They'll lean on McCaffrey early and often, allowing him to eclipse 150 scrimmage yards. They'll get 250-plus passing yards out of Purdy, who won't throw an interception but will throw multiple touchdowns to members of that Samuel-Aiyuk-Kittle triumvirate. The defense will get after Love, too, sacking him multiple times and snapping his five-game streak of not throwing an interception.
San Francisco is getting the win and the cover here.
