Sherri Rene Turner – Metropolitan Funeral
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, foreasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” I Corinthians 15:58
Sometime late in the evening on Wednesday, February 3rd, God granted his mercy and grace by calling into eternal rest our sweet, loving and kind Sherri Rene Turner, transitioning her from labor to reward and earned her heavenly wings. Sherri 59, was a native of Norfolk, Virginia and is predeceased by her mother Lana Turner-Hodges and brother, James E. Turner.
She was a 1980 graduate of Norview High School and attended Norfolk State University where she majored in accounting. While enjoying college life, she was a member of the famed Norfolk State University Marching Spartan Legion Band and later participated in the NSU Alumni Band playing alto saxophone.
After leaving NSU in 1983, Sherri decided she wanted to served her country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. She was a logistic supply specialist station at Elgin Air Force Base, Florida and overseas at Incirlik Air Base Turkey. After being honorably discharged in 1991 as a sergeant E-4, Sherri worked for the US Postal Service as a mail handler for 29 years and was a member of the National Postal Mailhandlers Union, Local 305. For her work efforts, Sherri received several recognitions for her dedication and years of service to the postal service.
Sherri had the sole of a missionary, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone that was in need. She volunteered as a “Cookie Momma” for her daughter Paris’ girl scout troop. She was a top cookie sales person selling more than 1000 plus boxes of cookies during each cookie campaign for 5 consecutive years. She received a patch from the girl scout council for her support and enthusiasm of young girls in the Norfolk community. She organized along with a troop leader projects for the neo-natal unit of the Children’s Hospital of Kings Daughter making crouched hats for the preemies and organized toiletry drives for senior citizens living at the Commonwealth Senior Living at The Ballentine in Norfolk.
She enjoyed planning activities for family and friends, as well as traveling when she had the opportunity to visit different places and meet new people. A strong advocate for education, Sherri helped the underserved college students struggling to succeed without the necessary resources to be successful in their educational endeavors. She proved to be a mentor, financier, personal shopper, counselor and friend.
Sherri leaves to celebrate her memory, a loving daughter, Paris Turner and her “Uba Duba” handsome grandson Karter Turner of Norfolk. A ray of sunshine to her father, Arthur Tuten of Chesapeake. Devoted siblings, Charles Turner of Exmore, Archie Turner, Sandra Pitts (Warren), Tiffany Brickhouse (Antonio) all reside in Chesapeake, Paula Smith (Amos), Robert Tuten (Latoya) all reside in Norfolk, and Crystal Miller (Gary) of Williamsburg, A blessing to three aunts, Jeanette Williams, Audrey Ingram and Danielle Turner all from Norfolk. She was a cherished niece to James Turner of Columbus, Ohio and Edward Turner of Portsmouth. Extended family and friends who adored her, Michael Lopez of Norfolk, Gloria Howell of Durham, North Carolina, Ivonna Johnson of Pensacola, Florida and Coral Sasse of Norfolk, as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Though our hearts are saddened for this moment, we rejoice in her life and love as we praise God for the constant phone calls, visit, cards and floral expressions we received from everyone. We say farewell to Sherri until we meet her again and trust that our Lord and Savior will grant us peace. “Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4
